Fat Bike Rentals at Summerstown Trails

The Friends of the Summerstown Trails (FOTST) is pleased to announce that rental of fat bikes is now possible at the Summerstown trails, at the trailhead. Rentals will be offered weekends only during our regular rental period (10 a.m. to 3 p.m.). The bikes will be rented out for one-hour periods at a cost of $15.

FOTST wishes to thank two of its members, Christian Seguin, owner of Active Sport Physiotherapy, and Dean Neville, owner of Total Cyclery and Sports, who have teamed up to purchase two fat bikes and donate them to our organization.

Riders will be able to access the 10 km of snowshoe trails, with signage posted to aid in navigation. These trails are groomed specifically for fat biking thanks to a partnership between FOTST and the Raisin Region Conservation Authority (RRCA). There are trails that the beginners will like and some for the more experienced riders.

Fat biking is a recent and fast-growing activity for those looking for a way to participate in a winter activity in a great environment. In order to achieve more stability and get better traction, fat bikes (sometimes called snow bikes) have tires with a minimum width of 9.4 cm (3.5 inches) with a tire pressure less than 10 pounds of air.

The two fat bikes available for rental are of medium size, and will accommodate people 5’6” to 5’10” in height. If you are just a bit shorter or taller, they will still be OK. We recommend that everyone wear a helmet, even if the Ontario law stipulates that it is only mandatory for those under the age of 18. A regular bicycle helmet will do (we will have some at the trails to lend out), but many bikers wear their ski helmets.
